Understanding New Zealand’s Active Investor Programme can be confusing, and with the upcoming changes on 1st April 2025, it’s important to be aware of how this could affect you.

Aaron Martin (Principal Lawyer at NZIL) sat down with Tim Crawford, Investment Adviser from Forsyth Barr, to talk about the different types of investments available under the investment category for residence visa policy. Forsyth Barr are New Zealand’s biggest independent financial adviser firm and are registered to provide financial advice.

 

There are two new categories being added to the Active Investor Programme:

1) Growth Investments – this involves a $5 million dollar investment over 3 years

2) Balanced Investments – this involves a $10 million dollar investment over 5 years

The types of investments that can be made in each category include:

Growth Investments ($5 million over 3 years):

  • Direct investments into companies on Live Deals (NZTE)
  • Managed funds that are recognised by NZTE, including investments into private equity, venture capital or private credit

Balanced Investments ($10 million over 5 years):

  • Equities – equities in businesses that are headquartered in NZ and do their business primarily in NZ
  • Bonds – this is a lower risk investment, so a safe and secure option
  • Philanthropy – investments into charities, etc., with a focus on helping NZ grow and improve as a country
  • Property – includes both residential and commercial property investments
  • Managed funds
  • Direct investments
