Having migrated to New Zealand in 2015, Maggie Zhu has a first-hand understanding of how daunting it can be to deal with the immigration system. Maggie became a licensed immigration advisor 2016, working directly with clients on their visa applications and strategies. She joined the team at NZIL as a legal and immigration assistant in 2021.

“The immigration process can be overwhelming, having the right person with the right knowledge just a phone call away makes all the difference. I love being that person for those who need it,” she says.

As a legal assistant Maggie works behind the scenes chasing up immigration officers, assisting immigration lawyer Aaron Martin, and communicating with clients to collect vital information and materials for their application. She enjoys helping clients understand their rights and setting comfortably into New Zealand society and says her proudest moment was helping a client who had overstayed for more than 10 years to get her residence visa.

Maggie is a self-confessed homebody and loves nothing more than to spend time with her family watching horror and suspense movies. “They stimulate my immigration law-laden brain and remind me that nothing in real life can be worse than a giant alien monster on your doorstep!”
